PTFE tapes are used in various applications. Most of the times these tapes are chosen instead of the PTFE sheet materials, because the flanges are too big to handle the gaskets that would have to be made for them. In general there are 2 types of PTFE tapes. Mono-directional and Multi-directional tapes. The difference has to do with the production proces and eventually the specifications of the materials. The MONO tapes feel like gum and are softer then the MULTI tapes. This means that te MONO tapes are easier to install but this material has less to no recovery in it. Ones it is compressed it will never come back to its original form/thickness. In some cases this is not an issue, but if there you have flanges that have, for instance, vibrations or expansion because of heat, the MONO tape is not suitable.
In those cases the use of Multi-directional tapes is advised. These tapes feel harder and they actually are harder. The mounting of these tapes is a bit trickier, because the tape needs to be mounted beffeled on eachother in a specific way. Advantage of this materials is that they do have a certain recovery in them so they can be used on flanges that have severe expansion or vibration.
All these tapes are available in different thicknesses and widths and each of them is supplied on a spool which contains lengths of 5, 10 or 20 metres of the tapes.
